BOSTON — Fifty people won the Massachusetts lottery game Mass Cash on Sunday, a record according to the state lottery agency.
For a dollar, players choose five numbers between 1 and 35 and mark the choice on a slip. WCVB-TV reported on Monday that 50 people chose the winning combination of numbers.
The largest previous number of people to win at once was 34, Massachusetts State Lottery official Christian Teja told the broadcaster. In this case, he said, the winning numbers all appeared in a column on the betting slip, which may account for why there were so many winners.
Usually, the jackpot for the game is $100,000. But when total prizes exceed a certain percentage of sales, the state agency uses a formula to determine the prize amounts, according to its website.
The people who matched all five numbers on Sunday will take home more than $48,000.
Winners bought tickets from across the state, including in Barnstable on Cape Cod, Easthampton, Ludlow and Lawrence. Five people bought winning tickets in the Boston neighborhood of Jamaica Plain.Fifty people won the Massachusetts lottery game Mass Cash on Sunday, a record according to the state lottery agency

It’s not unheard of for there to be multiple lottery winners but a new record was set Sunday night.
Fifty people won the Mass. Cash jackpot Sunday night, WCVB reported. The news station said there’s a logical reason for the high number of winners, though.
“Interestingly, on the bet slip that you must fill out in order to purchase a ticket, if you look at it, the numbers that all came up are in a vertical line, one on top of the other and sequentially they’re all six digits apart,” Christian Teja, state lottery spokesperson told the station.
Typically you win $100,000 if you match five out of five numbers.
Rather than having to split the money, though, each winner will claim $48,000, the news station reported.
Starting in the spring, winners will be able to claim large prizes from their phones and have their winnings deposited directly into a bank account through an app, State House News reported.
People have been asking to be able to scan their own tickets for years, wanting to find out what or if they’ve won, Lottery Executive Director Michael Sweeney said.
It will also have another impact — the environment.
“Besides doing all the obvious things like meeting our customers where they already are, meeting the modern-day technology expectations of people, it potentially has a huge impact on the environment,” Sweeney said.50 people won Massachusetts lottery jackpot on the same night, setting new record It’s not unheard of for there to be multiple lottery winners but a new record was set Sunday night.
